Project Timbtrack Digital tree measurement - Quimesis
Quimesis Timbtrack

Timbtrack

This system helps forest managers to identify, measure and assess the trees in their forests. Its integrated 3D camera allows for the measurement of tree volume and much more. Quimesis was responsible for the complete electronic and computer development of the device. So we turned the initial idea into a viable product.

Who's there?

TimbTrack is a Belgian startup whose vision is to simplify forest management. The founder, Quentin d'Huart, quickly joined by Geoffroy De Cannière, have well identified the needs of landowners to acquire a better knowledge of their domains. By introducing this new technology to this market, which is generally very conservative, they are giving them the ability to monitor, measure and evaluate their forests in a matter of seconds.

What's that all about?

The TPM is the measuring device for the new generation of foresters. It integrates the latest technologies (3D camera, telemeters, GPS, compass, ...) to measure, record, classify quickly and easily a complete forest.

The main purpose of the device is to measure the volume of trees. This is achieved by measuring the height as well as the circumference of the trunk with the TPM. Each piece of data is located and recorded in the device before being transferred to the management platform in the cloud.

Development

Quimesis has been involved in the project from the very beginning, from the basic idea to mass production. We focused mainly on the development of the custom electronics and its programming, while working closely with the hull design team.

The engineers have carried out several preliminary studies in order to select the best components. They then developed a robust algorithm to measure the volume of the shafts from the information provided by the on-board sensors.

The solution was tested in the field and improved for several months before launching the industrialization process.
