Timbtrack Project: Digital Tree Measurement - Quimesis
Quimesis Timbtrack

Timbtrack

This device helps forestry operators to list, measure, and assess the trees in their forests. Its integrated 3D camera measures the volume of trees, and much more. Quimesis was responsible for the complete electronic and IT development of the device. So, we turned the initial idea into a viable product.

Who?

TimbTrack is a Belgian startup with a vision to simplify forest management. The founder, Quentin d’Huart, quickly joined by Geoffroy De Cannière, have clearly identified the needs of landowners so that they acquire a better knowledge of their domains. By introducing this new technology to this market, which is generally very conservative, they give them the possibility to monitor, measure, and evaluate their forests in seconds.

Why?

The TPM is the measurement device for the new generation of foresters. It integrates the latest technologies (3D camera, rangefinders, GPS, compass, etc.) to quickly and easily measure, record, and classify an entire forest.

The main objective of the device is to measure the volume of trees. This is achieved by measuring the height as well as the circumference of the trunk with the TPM. Each piece of data is located and recorded in the device before being transferred to the management platform in the cloud.

Development

Quimesis has been involved in the project from the very beginning, from the basic idea to mass production. We mainly focused on the development of custom electronics and its programming, while working closely with the team designing the casing.

The engineers carried out several preliminary studies to select the best components. They then developed a robust algorithm to measure the volume of trees from the information provided by the embedded sensors.

The solution was tested in the field and improved for several months before launching the industrialization process.
